In an episode of the Business of Home podcast, Ken told host Dennis Scully that he was always sort of an alien. He always saw life in a very cinematic fashion. Ken was waiting for the troupe of dancers to enter from stage left, and he felt like it was always his responsibility to get others to see the world the way he did. Eventually, Ken did, though there were some in-between steps. After graduating from a college in Virginia,  he went to live in Boston and worked in a marketing job.

At a laundromat, a mix-up involving Ralph Lauren sheets led to him meeting his future husband. Soon after, on a whim, the couple moved to San Francisco, the freedom of a new home allowed Ken to “become himself.” Part of that transformation was a new profession where Ken became an interior designer in the late 1990s, His timing was fortuitous and San Francisco was on the verge of exploding with creativity, invention, and money to fund both.

Ken Fulk San Francisco

Many of Silicon Valley’s rising stars became Ken’s friends, contemporaries, and clients. He designed a home for Instagram founder Kevin Systrom and also the wedding of early Facebook president Sean Parker. San Francisco was also the perfect environment for a creative person like Ken who wanted to push creative boundaries and test the limits of what a designer could be without formal schooling.

Ken never worked for anyone else. He was never trained. It was all made up. He didn’t want someone to tell him he couldn’t do something or that he had to do something a certain way. Ken was desperate and passionate about learning, but he didn’t want to conform, because he felt somehow that he didn’t want anybody else’s business. The great irony is that now he hires only highly trained people who have enormous skills, which he does not have.

Ken Fulk Blantyre

In 2021, Ken and Clark Lyda (his partner in the Commodore Perry project) purchased one of the country’s most storied hotels: Blantyre, in the Berkshire mountains of Western Massachusetts. According to Ken, Blantyre—a Gilded Age Tudor-style mansion originally built in 1902 as a summer retreat for Industrialist Robert Patterson. It was on a very short list of places he had his eye on. In order to undertake a top-to-bottom redo, Ken closed Blantyre immediately after buying it, he was planning to reopen it a year later.

Ken bought it from Silicon Valley real estate developer Linda Law who owned the place since 2016. Lenda bought it from the family that started operating it as a luxury hotel in 1981, turning it into the first Relais & Chateaux property in America. Linda had conceived her own rather formal, contemporized Gilded Age redo, including d bringing Daniel Boulud to Blantyre, an innovation Ken will hold onto:

Ken Fulk Church

Perennial life of the party, designer Ken is not someone you might immediately peg as the churchgoing type. However, the devout sybarite founded his own congregation at Saint Joseph’s Arts Society. This is a San Francisco hot spot set inside a 1913 cathedral, (part members’ club, part retail concept, part cultural center) “We watched for years as the building fell into decline,” Ken recalls of the long-vacant Romanesque Revival landmark. He routinely passed on the way to work before buying it in 2016.

“It was breathtaking but decrepit. We had to save it.” Says Ken. The Church was restored with the help of California architecture firm Page & Turnbull, the structure shined again with refreshed finishes,a freestanding mezzanine that adds 9,000 square feet, and repaired stained-glass windows. The entry vestibule serves as retail space. Publisher Assouline and apothecary Officine Universelle Buly alongside  Ken’s own finds.

The mezzanine houses were the first permanent West Coast outpost of the Carpenters Workshop Gallery. On the third level, Arts Society subscribers can access a private bar and lounge. Communal gathering spaces fill the nave and beckon guests toward the performance-ready apse. “I wanted the church to represent us on our brightest day—who we are as artists, what we can give back to the world.” Says Ken.
